The project – NPTEL - is funded by the Indian Government and content of the courses is based on the curriculum that’s suggested by AICTE - Hence this should benefit all Engineering and Science students in India.

Adding video to school websites

Videos can be added to school websites as follows.

Upload the video into a video sharing site such as http://www.youtube.com/
Login to your school website with your role being teacher or school admininstrator.
Open a custom page or create a new one where the video has to be placed. Click on source in the rich text editor as shown below.
From the video sharing site copy the embed link.
Copy the code from that embed link and paste it into the rich text editor.
Save the custom page

You will now be able to view the video in the custom page.

New Hardware - Better ISP - Faster website

Over the weekend we have switched over to newer hardware and to a new Internet Service Provider. What does this mean ? It means a better user experience because the web pages will load faster.

The home page that used to take about 30 seconds to load now loads in 7 seconds. The school detail pages now loads in sub second times.

This is part of our efforts to continuously improve the user experience on this website and this is one of the many enhancements that we are making to achieve this.

I would like to personally thank the entire team of "YourSchool" for having done this wonderful job of helping me create a personalised website for our playschool. The website figures in the top hits of hot search engines like Google, Yahoo, Alta Vista etc. What else can any ask for?

When I first met the team and put forward my requirements, I was not sure if they could do it, but when I saw the first draft, I was totally impressed by the very look and feel of the website. Apart from all this, I have seen a great sense of belonging and team work in the executives who visited us. Giving timely information to parents about Holidays and Events happening at the school is important. The parents should also have an easily accessible list that gives details of all the holidays and the events that are happening in the school. The calendar module of yourschool.in provides parents with a readily available list of upcoming holidays and events that are happening in the school.

System administrators of schools can add, edit and remove calendar events at any point of time. Holidays can be of two kinds - single day holidays like public holidays or school holidays such as end of term holidays. All of these holidays can be configured in this module.

We are in the process of enhancing this calendar to show a complete timetable of classes for each student. We are also looking to show the information in a better manner to the student/parents/teachers.

SSC and SSLC

The Secondary School Certificate, also known as SSC, is a public examination (for class X) taken by students in Bangladesh, Pakistan and in the states of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Goa in India after successfully completing at least ten years of schooling.

The Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) is a certification obtained by a student on successful completion of an examination at the end of study at the secondary schooling (class X) level in India. Boards of education that administer the SSLC examination are the Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education and the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board.

In the princely State of Mysore, the first Government High School was started in 1858 in Bangalore, affiliated to the University of Madras and later, the Mission schools. The Secondary Education consisted of two stages - Middle Schools stage and High School state. The District Boards started a number of High Schools, and after re-organisation, the term Secondary Education gained a different connotation.

The Indian system of education fundamentally consists of five years of primary schooling, followed by five years of secondary schooling. The SSC or SSLC is obtained by passing a public examination, i.e., an examination that has been formulated by the regional board of education that the school is affiliated with, it is the key factor in obtaining admission to a higher secondary school of choice.

The predominant functions of the each of the state board curriculi and functions involve providing trained teachers for good academic guidance, Preparation of curricula and syllabi, bridging gaps between the methods and techniques advocated in training and the actual classroom practices. The boards also co-ordinate with national and international organisations in academic programmes to further streamline their curriculi as per the latest developing standards.

The curriculum includes the learning of 3 languages along with mathematics, science and social studies as the compulsory subjects. Students are given the option to choose among the languages based on the regional language of the state. The medium of these schools is mostly English throughout the country.

Some schools offer extra co-curricular activities such as arts, sports, NCC, social service, training for competitive exams and eco clubs.

Enhanced Security

We have put in a lot of security features in the application considering the sensitive nature of the data that is stored with us. In this article we will go over some of the security features that are in place.

Encrypted URL
All the URLs in the schools subsite and also in the yourschool.in main site are encrypted. Users cannot change values in the URL and navigate to different web pages. This way the user will have to navigate through the pages using the application or if someone had sent the user the URL.

Role based security
Access to different pages in the school website is determined by the role that you play. Currently we have three roles and they are General User, Student/Parent and Teacher.When you visit a webpage you will be shown only those parts of the web page that your role permits you to view or perform an action on.

Login access control
Users can post data on the website or make changes only if they are registered and have been assigned a role by the administrator. Unauthorised users are only allowed to browse through the data that is publicly available.

Organized school data
Each school's data such as uploaded documents, photographs and any custom information that is uploaded is maintained in separate folders for each school. This way we ensure that one school can never see the data f the other school.

News ticker on home page

On the school website we allow for the school to write news about the activities and events that are happening in the school. On the home page of the school we have now added a ticker which scrolls the current active news that is present on the news page of the school subsite. This way users will be aware of the events happening by just visiting the home page. Clicking on the news item on the home page gives the users more information about that news item.

New Improved Search

In the earlier search it was quite limiting that you could search only one locality or for schools having one facility or activity at a time. Users found this cumbersome as they always wanted to search for schools that are from a set of localities or having a set of facilities or conducted a set of activities. We have enhanced the search to be able to do this and you can do it by checking the check boxes that you want to include in your search. We have retained the old simple search on the home page and have put the more improved search on the Find a school link.

We have also ordered the search results by popularity, the quality of the information available about the school and whether the school has been verified by us.

Comprehensive Database of Schools
